To hire a director of software engineering in the UAE, be clear about what the job must deliver in the first year: scaling a team from a handful of engineers into several squads, rebuilding delivery after a rough release run, or bringing an offshore engineering centre under one leader. Candidates at this level choose employers on the strength of the mandate and the CTO they would report to, so the brief matters as much as the package.
Fintechs and banks, e-commerce and delivery platforms, telecoms, government digital entities and the regional engineering hubs of global vendors all need directors who have scaled organisations. The scarcest profile combines hands-on credibility with experience managing managers, ideally across more than one site. Many candidates have run teams split between the UAE and an engineering centre in India or Eastern Europe, so ask who reported to them and where they sat.
Screen for engineering management at scale rather than raw technical depth alone: hiring and developing engineering managers, owning delivery metrics, managing budgets and vendors, and working with product and finance leaders. Ask about architectural decisions the candidate sponsored and the trade-offs involved, and how they handled a missed roadmap. English is the working language of engineering leadership in most UAE companies.

The director leads several engineering teams through their managers, owns delivery and quality, manages the engineering budget and aligns technical plans with product and business goals.
It depends on team size. In a company with fewer than a few squads the director may still review designs and code, while in larger organisations the role is almost entirely leadership. State the expectation so candidates self-select.
Ask for examples of building and replacing managers, handling an underperforming team and communicating a missed deadline to executives. Reference calls with former direct reports are more telling than titles.
Often, yes. Many strong candidates are based in India, Europe or elsewhere in the Gulf, so plan for relocation support and the extra two to four weeks for visa and onboarding.
